The 77,000,000 dollar bridge across San Francisco Bay, the longest in the world over navigable waters, which 'inks San Francisco and Oakland, was opened'amid scenes of great enthusiasm. It is estimated that 125,000 people attended the opening. The Governor of California (Mr. Merriman), using an acetylene torch, cut through c, gold chain while 14 warships fired their guns. Mr. Roosevelt, at Washington, pressed a button illuminating green lights, which were the signal for cars to start at the rate of 200 a minute. The first car carried Mr. 11. C. Hoover and Mr. Merriam. Tho bridge took throe years to construct and 24 lives were lost in building the six-lane upper decks. The lower deck will be completed in 1938, and will carry trucks and railway lines.
