WORLD’S RICHEST HEIRESS

CLERK AT HONOLULU. Richest girl in the world, Doris Duke, 23-year-old American tobacco heiress to £8,000,000, has just told of something she cannot do with, her money. Doris Duke and her husband, Mr. James H. R. Cromwell, have ambitious plans for making Honolulu their playground. . She wanted a magnificent bathing pool, all to themselves, on a £lOO,OOO beach estate at the famous Kaalawai Beach there. But now the authorities have refused to permit the pool to be built.

“Great wealth being used to private ends in this way would be contrary to the public good,” they decided. “The granting of the permit would deprive the public of free access to the beaches, and would therefore be class legislation.” Doris Duke has often given the impression of being a “poor little xich girl,” who thinks that being the richest girl in the world isn’t any fun at all. Now another scheme for having fun has fallen ihrodgh.
