Dr. Joseph Delee, an internationally known obstetrician, and founder of the Chicago Lying-in Hospital, having one of the lowest maternity death rates in the world, on the occasion of his own 67th birthday anniversary, declared that most women were better off, giving births in homes instead of hospitals. Commenting on surveys, showing that, midwives had fewer deaths than hospitals, he said -that inidivives did not interfere with normal birth, and mothers were not exposed to fevers and communicable diseases, as in a general hospital. Only doctors of long experience in metropolitan maternity centres can handle complications properly.
