MONTHLY MEETING

HOKITIKA, September 12. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Perry), • Crs. G. Heinz, E. L. Park, H. L. Michel, A. R. Elcock, E. Teichelmann, T. W. Duff. Apologies from J. King, A. Thompson, H. T. Parry.
Leave of absence for three months was granted to Cr. King. The Council passing a motion of sympathy with him in his illness. The resignation of Miss M. Andrews as typiste was accepted with appreciation of her services. Griffen and Smith Ltd. wrote asking that the footpath and kerbing: in front of their new building in Weld Street be reconditioned, and undertaking to pay half-cost; also applying for a street crossing at the entrance to their right-of-way.—To be repaired at cost of applicants. N.Z. Refrigerating Co. advised that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika during the month of August.—l 33 sheep, one pig. The Manager, Hokitika Savings Bank, advised that the Trustees have granted a loan of £lB,OOO to the tika Borough Council foi- the Water Supply Loan 1936; Loan to be on a table mortgage basis over a period of 36 years at a rate of 3?. per cent., repayments of interest and principal to be made half-yearly in equal aggregate instalments. N.Z. Refi-igerating Co. wrote accepting terms and conditions in regard to a runner contract. The Hokitika Tennis Club wrote asking for kerbing along Sewell Street frontage. —Granted. Also stating that the Club’s property was rated as a residential area and asking for reduction. —Referred to the Valuation Department. The finance report showed: Receipts £l6OO/19/1, expenditure £1144/7/3, dist. fund accountd dr. balance £612 5/7. Accounts amounting to £lOl7 6/3 were passed for payment. The abattoirs report: Stock slaughtered for month of August: 34 heifers, 27 cows, 57 bullocks, 215 calves, 10 lambs, 5 pigs; condemned, two cows. Fees for month £62. 'Fees for corresponding month last year £69 12/6. Dealing with the Foreman’s report, it was stated that the damage to the water pipe line near Lake Kanieri was more extensive than was at first thought, some 22 chains of reinforced concrete piping being either shattered or badly cracked. Some 15 chains had been already relaid under difficult circumstances, and it was expected the repairs would be finished within a few days. The Council ratified an agreement with Kanieri Electric Ltd., for supply
of power for pumping scheme. The Mayor stated the agreement was very fair, the company’s proposed charges being moderate. Regarding Sewell Street drain, the Council decided to carry on the work as far as the money available would allow. Cr. Elcock mentioned the state of Hall Street, Weld Street, and Fitzherbert Street, between Weld and Stafford Streets, also Gibson's Quay and portions of Bealey Street. —It was decided that repairs be commenced immediately. Several street drains were also marked for attention.
