FIRE ESCAPE USED

AUCKLAND, September 7.
Having been observed by a young couple late in the afternoon of Saturday August 29, to climb a fire escape and descend after breaking and entering the warehouse of Ross and Glendining, in broad daylight. Robert John Dias,' 34, window cleaner, was charged at the Police Court, to-day, with breaking, entering and theft of goods valued at £l7. The principal witness, Arthur Lindon Hedges, said he was standing by his motor car in Elliott Street, with a friend. Miss Dorothy Mitchell, when he saw accused and another man leave the back of an hotel, and walk to the warehouse. He saw accused climb a fire escape, which he left on the first floor. Later, he climbed out of a window. came down to the footpath, and carried goods to the back of the hotel. Miss Mitchell left the car and called the police from Queen Street. The police gave evidence of finding goods in Dias’ shirt, and also a suitcase, containing goods, behind the door of the hotel. Dias was arrested, and on the way to the police station he tried to escape.
Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
SAFE ROBBED
WELLINGTON, September 7
The safe of Q-Tol Fluenzol laboratories, in Thorndon Quay, was blown by burglars, last night or this morning, but there was not much money to take. The work -was done by experts. They tok away the keys of the various doors inside the building, and the locks will have to be changed. Two typewriters, swept to the floor, were damaged.
GOODS STOLEN
ASHBURTON, September 5.
The theft of £ll5 worth of goods from the clothing warehouse of Millers, Ltd., at the corner of Kermode and East streets, Ashburton, was discovered by the branch manager of the firm when the premises were opened for business on Friday morning. The theft took place some time between then and 5.30 p.m. on Thursday, for everything was in order when the premises were closed for the night.
THIEF IMPRISONED
DUNEDIN, September 7.
Four years’ hard labour was the sentence imposed by Mr. Justice Kennedy this morning, on Victor Roydon Curline, 32, on 25 charges of breaking, entering and thefts from dwelling houses, the offences extending over a period of three years, the aggregate value of the goods taken being £474.
