PETER DAWSON CUP. On a muddy ground, in the worst conditions possible, Buller successfully defended the Peter Dawson Cup " against, the challenge of Westland, at. 1 Westport, on Saturday. The junior > curtain-raiser soon chopped up the : ground, with the result that the seniors had to contend with a sea of mud. The Buller players adapted themselves quickly to the conditions, and, showing splendid understanding, soon began to pile on the goals. The Coast team, on the contrary did not look like settling down and were not effective on defence or attack. The Buller team had an advantage in weight and seemed to revel in the heavy going, but the lighter Coast team could not control the ball. Few, if any of the team could be blamed for their defeat. They failed to function as a team. Buller were definitely superior on the day and the score is probably a fair criterion of the play. Yet the Coast team gave the impression that with a dry ball and a dry ground, the game would not have been so one-sided. The play was generally not of a high standard, the conditions making passing uncertain. Buller opened the scoring ""early in the match, when Taylor slipped through and sent a pile-driver past Young into the net. Shortly afterwards Parkinson put. his hand on the ball right in front of the goal, and White made no mistake with the penalty. Coast’s score followed quickly on this second reverse. J. White goaling with a great shot. Buller (2), Coast (1). The visitors’ hopes of evening the score, however, soon vanished. First, Scott, then Orman and, just before half-time, Taylor? scored good goals for Buller. In the second spell. Buller again dominated the play. Young was playing well in goal, but shots were hammered on him from all angles, and it was not long before G. Orman had again found the net. Then Blythe drew the defence, and C. Orman made no mistake from an easy angle. Just before time. Taylor added a further goal, his third for the match. Final score: Buller 8. Westland 0.
WESTLAND JUNIORS WIN. In the junior game played as a curtain-raiser to the Peter Dawson Cup match at Westport, Westland juniors defeated Buller by six goals to nil. The game was more even than the score indicates, there being no score at the interval. The Coast team were slow in settling down, but played an attractive, bustling game in the second spell. The scorers were: Montford (3), Newton. Hopkins and Paton.
CANTERBURY BEAT OTAGO.
CHRISTCHURCH, September 5
The Canterbury Soccer representatives scored a runaway win in theii first game in defence of the Football Association Trophy, when they defeated Otago by seven goals to nil to-day. Although poor goalkeeping by L. Holden was partly responsible for Otago s heavy defeat, Canterbury were clearly superior in most departments while team work was a big factor in the win. G. Smith, centre-forward, in the winning side, was the hero of the day. He did not make a single mistake, leading the attack with rare judgment. He had good support from E. Hall and G. Ellis, left-wing, and inside right.. Otago lacked combination and finishing ability, and they made the mistake of overplaying their veteran centi eforward, W. Hooper, who could not finish the move. Any shots Otago did have were confidently handled by -D. Mcßae, the Canterbury goalkeeper. The Otago team was weakened by the inability of some players to travel. It included five men who had not played in either of the previous games this season against Canterbury. The ground was greasy after "recent rams. Canterbury’s scorers in tlie first spell weie Hall and Ellis, and in the second spe Smith (2). Ellis (2) and Hall. the final stages with Otago batt bn. hard to open their account Mcßae twice saved brilliantly, first. Hom Hooper, then from A. S» therl “ n,i . ‘ final score was Canterbury t, Otago nil.
