HOKITIKA, August. 29
There was an attendance of about sixty tradespeople fit the Town Ilall last evening, when a meeting was held to consider the matter of working out the 44-hour week for shops. Mr C. A. Perry (Mayor) presided. Air D. Dowell moved that Saturday be observed as the half-holiday. This was seconded, but the Mayor pointed out that this could not be done. Mr J. L. Turner moved that the half-holiday be observed on Mondays. This did not meet with a seconder.. On tlie suggestion of the Mayor it was ultimately resolved that the 44 hours week lie from 8.30 a.m. till 5 p.m. daily, except Wednesdays and Saturdays, when the lime will be B.fin 12*20. and 8.20 a.m. to 8.30 p.m. respectively. Keen disappointment has been felt among golfers on account of the weather interfering with the tournament. Some players returned to Christchurch, without competing. The visitors were entertained last evening at. a Cabaret at the Soldiers’ Hall.-

The death occurred at a Carterton* private hospital early this morning, of Mrs Marv Roberts, wife of Mr Ben Roberts, M.P. for Wairarapa, aged G 7. Deceased had been ill for a few weeks. She leaves a family of three sons and four daughters. —Press Assn.
