LORD SEMPILL SUED
BILLS FOR £3500 ACCEPTED
LONDON, July 25
Mr. Justice Hawke yesterday gave judgment in favour of Mills Conduit Investments, a West End firm of moneylenders, against Lord Sempill, in respect of bills for £3500 which he had accepted. The bills had been drawn by C. L. Allingham, accepted by .Lord Sempill, and deposited against a. loan which the plaintiffs made to Allingham of £2750 at 120 per cent. *Lord Sempill denied indebtedness, pleading that he had accepted the bills to enable Allingham to redeem shares of which he claimed possession, and also to provide funds for a theatrical enterprise in which Allingham, Lord Sempill and others were interested.
Allingham had promised to redeem the bills before their maturity, added Lord Sempill, but he had gone to America, whence he was now returning. Mr. Justice Hawke said that Lord Sempill was not the borrower, and as the interest was excessive it would be reduced to 10 pei’ cent.
