TENNIS. [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. COPYBIGHT.] LONDON, August 9. The Hampshire tennis tournament finals resulted: — Singles: Quist, beat Sproule 6/2, 6/0.
Doubles: Quist and Sproule beat Bean and Turkey 6/3, 7/5.
Mixed Doubles: Quist and Lyle beat. Sproulo and Thompson 6/1. 1/6, 6/3.
RIFLE SHOOTING
TIMARU, August 9
The South Island miniature rifle championship meeting was held on Saturday evening, 170 competitors taking part." The championship was won by W. Falloon, of the Weston Club, Oamaru, whose score was 157, after a shoot-off with five others. The women’s championship also resulted in a tie, Mrs C. H. Andrew, of Oamaru, with 153, winning on a shoot-off with two others. The teams’ championship went to Pleasant Point, 389. Willowbridge 355, being runners-up.
RUGBY FOOTBALL. Platying at Ikamatua yestetrday, Cronadun defeated Ikamatua by 9 points to 3. The forwards were evenly matched, the Cronadun backs being superior to the home team. Ikamatua were handicapped by playing two men short. Despite the wet weather, the ground was in good order. For Cronadun tries were scored by McMahon, Bryden, and Brazil. Cowan kicked a penalty goal for Ikamatua. Mr A. Bradley was referee.
WESTLAND FOOTBALL ASSN. A meeting of the Management Committee of the Westland Football Association was held on Saturday evening, Mr. E. Flood presiding. It was decided, in view of the alteration in the date of the South Island Chatham Cup final, Western A. v. Millerton, to August 22, the date originally set down for the WestlandBuller match, that the Secretary endeavour to arrange the provincial fixture of September 5. An application by Mr. F. M. Smyth, for a donation towards the entertainment expenses of the two Otago Boys’ High School Soccer teams, who will visit Greymouth in the school holidays, this month, was referred to the secretary to make arrangements for a suitable donation. Accounts amounting to £6 4/- were passed for payment.
BOXING. An opportunity to see the Australian welter-weight boxer, Cyril Pluto, in action will be afforded local boxing enthusiasts to-morrow evening, when he will give an exhibition in the Town Hall. He will demonstrate not only his own specialised punches, but also those of the better-known Australian boxers, and will illustrate by sparring with Frank Bell, Joe Cox and other local amateurs. He will also demonstrate scientific footwork, and training methods. An effort is also being made to arrange several amateur bouts to complete the programme, for which a small charge will be made to cover expenses.
SKI-ING.
About 15 members of the West Coast Alpine Club visited the Arthur’s Pass ski-ing grounds over the week-end. There was a fairly heavy fall of snow on Saturday night, and as a result the, grounds were in perfect order yester-
