NEW ZEALAND v. FIJI.

[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.]

WELLINGTON, August 8. The women’s hockey Test between New Zealand and the Fiji team was played to-day and resulted in a win for New Zealand by 4 goals to 0. Nev Zealand had a definite territorial advantage throughout the game, but stout defence prevented them from scoring until late in the first half, the half-time score being one goal tp nil. Both teams brightened considerably in the second half, but after about 10 minutes’ play, New Zealand became definitely superior and consistent attacking gave them three goals.in ciuicK succession. The Fiji defence was still sound, but the team was tiring, and the retaliation was negligible The New Zealand forwards played with combination and speed, characteristics which were lacking in the Fiji attack. The visitors’ defence, on the othei

hand was particularly stubborn, the left full-back being outstanding. Good positional play gave Miss Sheriff, inside left, the first two goals. The third goal was scored by superior stick work bv Mrs. Reid,, captain and centre-for-ward, who carried the ball from just outside the circle right into the goalmouth. Miss McKenzie, inside right, who showed up in several speedy runs, scored a remarkable fourth goal, running through the defence from the haltway line shortly before the final whistle. Several dangerous openings by the visitors lacked the finish ‘J'equired to score, chances repeatedly being missed through the players not being up on the ball. The game was played at a good speed, the final score being a fair indication of the meiits oi the teams.
