SCHOOLROOM ON ROOF

HEALTH AND NERVES IMPROVE

LONDON, June 11

Astonishing results have been noted at a roof-top .schoolroom installed last year for 30 backward and ailing boys in a London clemeiitarj’ school. At. the school where the experiment was made—Popham-road Boys’ School. Islington, N.—careful records were made regularly for a period of a year of the pupils’ height, weight and general fitness. They show that: The boys have gained considerably in height and weight. They look better in health. Nervous disorders have disappeared. Attendance has been regular. Very few colds have been recorded.

The roof-t-T) class-room is furnished with folding desks, blackboards, a master’s table, and a weighing-ma-chine. It has been fitted by the boys with electric light.

Lessons follow the usual school routine, except for special attention to physical exercises and handwork. Malt and milk “rations” are given to the boys daily. Mr. A. W. Dean, the headmaster, is so satisfied with the results of the experiment that he is to allow other classes to take some of their lessons “on top.”
