NOTES ON THE RACING

[SPECIAL TO “STAR.”]

CHRISTCHURCH, July 25.

Thd annual steeplechase meeting of the South Canterbury Hunt Club was very successful, despite drizzling showers of rain during most of the afternoon, causing much inconvenience to patrons, and making the track conditions very sloppy. The racing nevertheless was closely contested, and the jumping events provided some good displays. The absence of Punchestown from the South Canterbury Steeplechase caused some disappointment, as it was hoped his showing would give some line as to his Grand National prospects. Apart from an earlier decision not to take him to the meeting if the track should be soft, he suffered, during the past week from corns,' and he was under treatment for these on Saturday. It is intended to school him next week, and all going well, he will take his place in the Homeby Steeplechase, in which he will be ridden by A. Peart.

Concertpitch was also missing on Saturday as the track was against him, and it was not thought advisable, in the face of his lengthy spell from racing to give him a race in heavy going und'er his big impost. He too, will appear on Saturday. The South Canterbury Steeplechase was won by High Speed, who was successful in the same race last year, and a similar performance was credited to Royal Buck, who again prevailed in the Hunt Cup Steeplechase. On both occasions High Speed was, ridden by H. Turner, and Royal Buck by R. Beale.

Footwork Opens Account: Havering appeared to have the Hadlow Hack and Hunters’ Hurdles won for the Hon. P. C. Webb when he jumped the last fence well clear of Look Smart and Footwork, but he stopped very badly when Footwork tackled him a hundred yards from the post, and failing to respond to punishment was beaten by a short length. Footwork, an aged gelding by Polazel from the All Black mare Dribble, had not previously won a race of any kind, and this was the first win enjoyed bj T Mr P. Delargey’s colours for a long time back. Look Smart, who was favourite acted as leader until the turn into the straight, where she was passed by Havering. Redolent narrowly missed a fall at the first fence, his rider, C. Hughes making a great recovery. He lost a lot of ground, and was never afterwards dangerous. Blazon looked likely rounding the home turn, but failed to carry on. Gentlemen Riders:

Royston, by Tribulation from th© dam of Bodyline, carrying the same colours as Bay Duke, had an end to end victory in the Pareora Steeplechase, for gentlemen riders. There was never much pace on, but the dis-

’play of jumping was good, the winner especially not putting a foot wrong. The second horse Cock o’ the North was a long way back with half a mile to go. but put in some solid work over the business stages and comfortably beat Waikari for second money. Scotsden was tailed off. The remaining contestant Harkaway, slipped on landing over the first of the stand double the first time, and parted companj r with his rider. High Speed Again: Nocturnus, racing in the colours of the Hon. G. R. Hunter, was going very freely in front in the South Canterbury Steeplechase, when he tried to jump the wing of the sod wall at the half-mile post, and his rider was thrown clean out of the saddle. His stable mate High Speed was then left in control from Dunmure, who had his chance settled by a bad jump at the six furlong post, when making a likely forward move. High Speed’s rider had trouble in keeping his mount away from the riderless Nocturnus in the run home, but he had plenty in hand to beat Dunmure. Night Parade broke down in the race, but completed the course.

A Creditable Effort: Rose of Tralee, now trained by her owner, Mr J. H. Watson, at Riccaiton, had an attractive win in the Levels Hack Handicap. She followed Golden Vision, Silver Sail and- Silver Coat into the straight, and as soon as they straightened up for home, she rushed througn on the rails. She was in front a furlong from the past, and without being seriously called upon, easily beat the favourite, Silver Coat, who wore down Golden Vision in the last few strides. Desirable was a poor fourth, in front of Silver Lark, Silver Sail and Elgindale.

Favourite Prevails: Bandy Boa and Bonny Buff disputed the lead for the greater portion of the Teschemaker Hunt Cup Steeplechase, with the favourite Royal Buck, who did not jump the early fences as well as usual, tailing off. Royal Buck made a fast forward move approaching the home turn, and was on terms with Bandy Boa at the last fence. Both jumped together, but Royal Buck always had the upper hand on the flat, and won with something, in hand. Harkaway was a poor third, and Scotsden and Money Mine completed the race a long way back. Royal Buck is owned by his breeder, Mr A. S. Elworthy, Chairman of the Canterbury Jockey Club Committee, and vice-president of the South Canteibury Hunt.

Improved Showing: Tippling who, ridden at Waimate by Mr K. Austin, ran very poorly, was allowed a pay a good price in the Hunters’ Plate Handicap. Crash showed his usual pace for two furlongs, but the soft track soon settled him, and Acena opened up a big gap. This was gradually reduced turning for home, and as soon as the run home was opened, Tippling rushed past him, and went on to a decisive victory. Acena, who carries the same colours as Lord Ranald when laced a couple of seasons back, hung on for second money from the favourite Gay Boa, who shaped very poorly following His easy win in similar company at Waimate. A Game Mare:

. Rebel Lad was preferred to Queen Dorothy in the Washdyke Hack Handicap, and when he took charge .from Honour’s Lass well down the straight, his victory seemed assured, but Queen Dorothy, who was always in a handy position, swooped down on him in the last fifty yards, and won in an impressive manner. Honour’s Lass kept at Rebel Lad to the post, and was only beaten by half a lengt'i for second place. Jack Ahoy, who failed to run on, was next, with Cape Gabo beaten off.

The Surgeon Returns: rhe totalisator figures up to this stage showed a considerable falling off, but a big pool in the concluding event, the Claremont Handicap, made up the leeway, and the total for the day finished up £8 ahead of last year’s figures. Mount Vai was confidently supported and carried 152 more tickets than Bay Duke, who had the services of L. J. Ellis. Bay Duke and Shock made the pace a cracker from the start, and Shock petered out at the straight entrance. Bay Duke carried on to the distance, where he too, felt the effects of the ordeal, and Mount Vai and The Surgeon soon had his measure. Mount Vai finished well with a belated run, but The Surgeon, who also put in some solid work at the right end, held him off to gain a clear victory. Acla was a good third, half a length in front of Toreador, with Daring Deed and Bay Duke next. The Surgeon showed a return of his form earlier -in the season, and although he does not appeal as a Winter Cup proposition, he will need watching during the Grand National week. Golden Dart, who did not carry much support, shaped poorly in the unaccustomed going.

MANAWATU RESULTS.

MISS PANGO WINS CUP.

PALMERSTON N., July 25

The Manawatu winter meeting was held in glorious spring weather and with a large attendance. The course was in great order, the going being particularly good. As the riderless horses came in L. Mathieson remounted Cotsfield, J. Walsh remounted Capella Abbey and a spectator, Mr L. Corbett remounted Dark Princess.
