PLAINTIFF AWARDED DAMAGES [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, July 25. Succeeding on one of the three allegations of libel against. Walsh and Newfield, president and secretary respectively of the Federated Seamens Union, Douglas Gibson was awarded £75 damages by Mr. Justice Blair with costs on the lower scale, disbursements. witnesses’ expenses, etc. Mr. Justice Blair held that the principal statement at issue was made on a privileged occasion and without malice He thought what had actuated defendants was not malice but concern for the Union. The issue on which plaintiff succeeded was in reference to an allegation in a letter to the branches, that accused gained a livelihood by nefarious means.
