Miss D. Clarkson left, this morning, on return to Wellington.

Mrs. A. V. Oliver left, to-day, on a visit to Timaru and Dunedin.

Miss R. Morley will leave to-morrow, on a visit to Nelson.

Mrs. C. Wicks and Mr. L. Wicks left to-day, for Christchurch.

Mr C. W. Restieaux returned on Saturday, from a visit to Wellington.

Mrs. E. Boote and Miss J. Hignett left by this morning’s express for Christchurch.

Mr. D. A. Clarke, Train Running Officer, Greymouth, has received notice of transfer to Wellington.

Mrs. F. Merritt, Napier, who has been visiting Greymouth, left to-day, for Dunedin, to attend the Dominion conference of the Women’s Institute.

A Berlin cablegram stated that Herr Franz von Papen has been appointed' Ambassador, with a special mission, to Vienna.

A London cablegram announced the death of Sir Arnold Theiler, the European and South African veterinary surgeon. He was born at Frick. Switzerland, in 1867.

The death has occurred (stated a London cablegram) of Sir Henry Wellcome, Kt., F.R.S., LL.D., D.Se., the archaeologist and expert in tropical diseases.

The death is announced from London, of Dr. C. C. Gatley, formerly examiner in common law to the University of New Zealand. He was born in 1882.

The Mayor of Auckland (Mr. Ernest Davis) left by the*'Monterey on Saturday on a holiday trip to Suva and Pago Pago. He is due back at Auckland on August 7.

Mr. H. Robinson, gaoler and probation officer at Greymouth, for the past three years, has received notice of transfer to Wanganui and will leave in a fortnight’s time. He will be succeeded at Greymouth by Mr. W. Davies, of Auckland.

Mrs. J. J. McKay (Hari Hari), President of the West Coast Federation of the Women’s Institute, left, to-day, for Dunedin, to attend the Dominion Conference of the Institutet. Mrs. C. Tilleyshort, Secretary of the Greymouth W.1., left for Dunedin on Saturday night.

A Sydney cablegram announced the death of Doctor john nmith Purdy, one of the most prominent figures in public life in Sydney, over a long period. ,ie died suddenly at a private hospital. He was due to retire next January from the position of City Health Officer.

Police transfers were announced today, as follow: Supt. D. C. Fraser of Christchurch, to be Supt. at Wellington*. A. Cameron of Dunedin, to be Supt. at Christchurch. Inspector S- Rawle of Christchurch to be Supt. at Dunedin. Sergeant T. Wolfendale of Christchurch, transferred to Auckland. Constable J. Crowley promoted Sergeant, and to remain at Christchurch.

* In honour of his marriage to Miss Joyce Dowler, which takes place at Holy Trinity Church, Greymouth, this evening, Mr M. R. Bunt was met, last evening, by the members of the Greymouth Swimming Club, of which he is treasurer, and presented with a leather suitcase. The presentation was made by the Secretary of the Club (Mr J. A. Mclnroe) who wished Mr Bunt and his future wife success and happiness.

Messrs D. Hyndman and E. Brailsford were the guests at a valedictory function in the Cobden Gymnasium on Saturday evening, in appreciation of the services that each had rendered as master of ceremonies for Cobden dances. Mr. Hyndman left, to-day, for Hokitika, where he will reside, and Mr. Brailsford has also left the district temporarily. There was a large gathering and dancing enjoyed, the music being supplied by Mrs. King, Messrs J. Duncan, L. Abbie and A. Todd, while extras were played by Mrs. M. Mead and Miss K. Harwood. A presentation of a shaving outfit and cigarette case was made to Mr. Hyndman by Mr. E. Cressey (President of the Home and School Association). Mr. R. Roper (Cobden Convent Committee), Mr. Yates (York Hall Social Committee) and Mr. G. Harwood (Debating Club) also spoke. Mr. Brailsford was presented with a cigarette case and lighter. The singung of “For They are Jolly Good Fellows" concluded a pleasant gathering.
