WESLEY SURPRISE MAWHERA. In ideal weather, and on fast grounds, lhe West Coast Hockev Association’s championship was continued on Saturday at the Recreation Ground. Excellent hockey was produced in the Pacific-Cobden match, which was fast and even throughout. Pacific, after being down at half-time, finished well, and scored a narrow victory. Wesley surprised by defeating Mawhera by a good margin, for their first victory of the season. PACIFIC 3, COBDEN 2. Pacific and Cobden provided one of the best games of the season. The pace was on from the start, and the standard of the hockey was high. Cobden led 2-1 at half time, and for some time into the second spell, but Pacific lasted the better, and came out winners. S. Knapp (2) and Crase goaled for Pacific, and J. Weir netted twice for Cobden. Messrs W. Newton and H. Perrin were the umpires. WESLEY 4, MAWHERA 1. I • Wesley scored their first win of the I season when they defeated Mawhera

by four goals to one. The game was evenly contested in the first spell, which ended one goal all, but the superior combination of the Wesley eleven had its reward in the second session, with the scoring of three goals. Moore, Panckhurst and .1. Newton (2), netted for the winners, and Perrin for Mawhera. Messrs S. Knapp, and W. Butler were the umpires.

FIJIAN WOMEN DEFEATED

Wellington beat the touring Fiji women’s hockey team by 4 goals to 0 on Saturday. The Fijians played an attractive game but lacked the forceful style and finish of the local players. A feature of the game was the brilliant saves by Miss L. Storek, the Fijian goalkeeper.
