TOKIO, July 25.

The latest, propaganda for a wool substitute is a staple fibre exhibition covering a large floor area in Tokio s biggest department store. It shows the complete process from cedar logs to a multitude of textiles, apparel, and furnishings. The exhibitor, the Nitto Spinning Company, can produce 30 tons of staple fibre a day and is negotiating for a 10,000,000 yen plant to double the output in a year.

NEGOTIATIONS WITH AUSTRALIA

The Foreign Office confirms that Japan, and Australia have agreed to re-open trade negotiations on the basis of the existing customs conditions.

The Government is drawing up a plan to improve Japanese shipping, estimated to cost £600,000 a year. It includes a subsidy for tramp shipping, the development of new routes, and the construction of freighters with a speed of 20 knots for defence and commercial purposes.
