EX-RADIO MAN

HAS BIG HOUSE AND CARS

LONDON, June 6

A former wireless operator at sea who, it was stated, now had a large house, a staff of servants, and two cars, was one of three men fined it total of £4OO at Silloth, Cumberland, yesterday. The case followed the confiscation of nearly 1,000,000 Irish sweepstake tickets.

William Leonard Newcombe, an unemployed clerk; Frederick Andrew Woodall, of independent means; and Thomas Edward Woodall, a tailor, all of Wallasey, Cheshire, pleaded guilty to being in possession of the tickets.. There were further charges against Newcombe and Frederick Woodall, of “harbouring” and of removing tickets. It was stated that a Customs officer stopped two cars with suit cases containing the tickets. The majority were for America. Mr. D. J. Wilson, prosecuting, said that Frederick Woodall was responsible, the other two men being “pawns.” Woodall was the man stated to have been a wireless , operatoi’ in 1932. He then earned £l2.a month. Frederick Woodall was fined a total of £300; Newcombe a total of £75, and Thomas Woodall £25.
