BALHAM BY-ELECTION. [BY CABLE —PBESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] LONDON, July 24. The Balham and Tooting by-elec-tion, caused by the resignation of Sir Alfred Butt, resulted as follows: Doland (Conservative) .. 14,959 Miller (Labour) .. .. 12,889 Majority for Doland .. 2,070 Only 49 per cent of the electorate voted. At the 1935 election, the polling was:—Sir Alfred But (C) 22,013; W. D. Lloyd (Soc.) 12,960. Majority for Butt 9,043.
EAST GRINSTEAD (Recd. July 25, 11 a.m.) LONDON, July 24. The East Grinstead by-election following the elevating of the Conservative, Mr. Cautley, to the peerage, resulted: — Colonel Stephenson Clarke (Conservative) 22,207 A. Millett (Labour) .. .. 5,708 COMMONS VACATION [BBITISH OFFICIAL WIRELESS.] RUGBY, July 24. After a protracted and disturbed debate on the unemployment assistance regulations, which concluded early this morning, after 34] hours speeches, the Commons met this forenoon in calmer mood, and before adjourning, passed by 134 votes to 60, the third reading of the Cattle Industry Bill, extending the period of subsidy to the end of July next. A motion for the adjournment for the summer recess will be taken today week. The Prime Minister hopes to leave London on Thursday for a holiday at Aix Les Bains.
