MOTORIST AWAITING TRIAL

TE AWAMUTU, July 24

Arrested this morning for allegedly being intoxicated in charge of a motor vehicle. John Snowden strangled himself in the police cells while awaiting' trial. He is stated to have collided with a car driven by a. Mr Bishop, a farmer of the district, early this morning, causing considerable damage to the vehicle. Snowden was accompanied by two other men, and was returning from Hamilton to Te Kuiti. He was placed in the cells at Te Awamutu. He was to have been charged under the Motor Vehicles Act this afternoon. When the police looked into the cell after lunch, Snowden was dead, having tied n handkerchief in such a way as to have strangled himself. He is believed to have come from Te Kuiti.
