INCREASED PENSIONS

AHL SAVAGE’S INTiMATION

(PEB PRESS ASSOCIATION.]

WELLINGTON, July 25

A Pensions Bill providing increases in the existing rates of pensions and widening the scope of the sygtem generally, will be brought down in the House of Representatives by the Government, within the next few weeks, according to a statement by Mr. Savage, who at the same time, indicated that preparations were being made for working out a much more comprehensive scheme.

“We intend io increase pensions as we promised,” said Air. Savage, “and make those increases retrospective to July 1. All pensions will be covered by the increases. Provision will also be made for invalidity pensions.”

Asked if the basis of the pensions scheme would be contributory, Mr. Savage said that, something of that kind would have to be adopted. It was too early yet to discuss the appointment of the Parliamentary Undersecretary to take charge of the national superannuation scheme but he considered the scheme offered scope for such appointment.
