ABEL TASMAN SURVE Y 0 R' S INSPECTION The Abel Tasman’s position on the north side of the north breakwater remains unchanged, the vessel having a list of about 30 degrees to the port, side The severe buffeting by the heavy seas has caused the top bulwarks on the port counter to spring, and the rudder has become loosened. Apparently, the engine-room has not been holed as there is no evidence there, of the rise and fall of the tide, but one end of one of the holds has partly burst open. Much of the machinery on the deck, including the hatch beams, are twisted. Captain G. Knowles, surveyor to the Council of the New Zealand Marine Underwriters, arrived yesterday, and inspected the ship, this morning. He will make his recommendations to the Underwriters. The Inspector of Machinery and Surveyor of Ships, Gieymouth. Mr. J. G. Lockie, inspected the vessel yesterday. Salvage operations were carried out yesterday afternoon, by seven members of the crew, and quantities of the men’s personal effects were secured. Some of the men, especially those quartered on the port, side, saved practically nothing. All the ship’s papers and consignment letters, with the mate’s sextants were brought off, intact. Yesterday, members of the crew received orders, for clothing, to the value of £5 each, from the Shipwreck Relief Society. _ . Little of the ship’s cargo has so lar been washed up on the North beach.
