WELLINGTON, July 3

The judgment of the Arbitration Court, fixing the hours of work in the sawmill, box factory, and timber yard industries was delivered by Mr. Justice Page to-day. The judgment fixes the hours at forty per week, exclusive of overtime.

The judgment said that it had not been established that it would be impracticable to carry on the industries efficiently on the forty-hour week. The rates of pay would be adjusted so that the ordinary weekly rate would not be reduced by reason of the reduction of the working hours. The question of fixing the hours so that no part of the working period fell on a Saturday would be dealt with in a subsequent memorandum. A judgment fixing the working hours at forty per week was to-day given by the Arbitration Court on the application of the workers who' are under the Northern, Wellington, Canterbury, Otago and Southland Woollen Mills employees’ award. It was considered not to be impracticable to carry on efficiently the industry or work of any of the factories in question on the 40-hour week. An orddr was made that no part of the working week shall fall on Saturday.

WELLINGTON, July 4.

A judgment, to-day, in the Arbitration Court, amends the Otago and Southland paper mills employees’ award as from September 1, so that the hours of work for those bound' by the award shall not be more than 40, exclusive of overtime, in any one week. Rates of pay prevailing on September 1 are to be adjusted so that the ordinary rate of weekly wages shall not be reduced. The Court stated that it had not been established that it would be impracticable to carry on efficiently on a 40 hours’ week.
