MILE RECORD BROKEN.

LONDON, June 20

At the Southern Championships, S. C. Wooderson won the mile in 4min. 10 4-ssecs., beating Lovelock’s British record, and out-distancing the exchampion, Thomas, th© Air Force representative, by forty-eight yards. Lovelock, for the purpose of speeding up his finish in distance races, competed in the half-mile at the Southern Championships. He was beaten by fifteen yards by J. V. Powell in 113.8 seconds.

U.S.A’S RECORDS

CHICAGO, Juno 20.

Two world records were established to-day at the National Collegiate Athcltic Association’s meeting) Jesse Owens, running one hundred metres in 10.2 secs., clipped one-tenth of a second from Williams's record.

Ken Carpenter, of the University of Southern California, throwing the discus, did 173 feet, compared with th© old mark of 171 feet 11” inches. Archie Williams, a negro.student at the University of California, set a

world's record of 41.1 secs, for a 400 metres run to-day in the Olympic trials compared with Bill Carr's mark ot 46.2.

Another notable performance of (he day was the 10.3 secs, for 100 metres by Harvey Wallender, of Texas, equalling Wiliams’s world record.

LONDON, June 20

The Associated Press Special Paris representative says: Despite the weariness after travelling all night from Marseilles, some Australian and New Zealand Olympic representatives are undertaking training this afternoon on the grounds of the Racing Club de Paris. It has also been arranged that the police eight row on the Seine to-motrow, otherwise the team is endeavouring to do the utmost sightseeing. ThO kangaroo which travelled on the same train was object of great interest to foreigners.

FRENCH TEAM

PARIS, June 20

The French Olympic Committee informed the authorities it is sending a team, though the French Government decided against official representation. A committeeman stated to the Press that no doubt Parliament would vote credits for the unofficial representation. A unique point may be raised in the event of a French victory, as the team will be unofficial, and it is doubtful whether a French flag could be run up.
