After a run of six days from Palm Island, near Townsville, the 32-foot American ketch "Idle Hour” arrived here this afternoon, after a fast trip. There was heavy south-easterly weather. The ketch is staying here several days. STUD SHEEP SHOW. SYDNEY, June 16. There are two New Zealand exhibitors at the annual stud sheep show opening in Sydney to-morrow, namely Donald Grant (Timaru), who is showing Corriedales and Border Leicesters, and A. S. Elworthy (Timaru) exhibiting Southdowns. This year’s entries are a record, approximately, 1000. TRADE WITH JAPAN. CANBERRA, June 16. As an inducement to Japan to reopen trade treaty negotiations, the Commonwealth Government is prepared to transfer Japan’s goods from the general tariff division to the intermediate. This would reduce the duty on Japanese rayon from 9d to 8d a yard, and on cotton piece goods by a farthing all round. Australia is also prepared to undertake to ensure that Japan retains at least half her present textile trade, while facilities will also be afforded for Japan steadily to expand her Australian trade as a good customer of the country.
WARNING TO SINGERS FREMANTLE, June 17. Mr. Ivor C. Boustard, formerly chief study teacher of singing and voice production at Melbourne Conservatorlum of Music, who returned from abroad by the Strathnaver, said that many Australian .and New Zealand singers went to England unprepared and unequipped to succeed. Many of them would be better advised to spend another two or three years in their own countries. They should not venture abroad, unless they had sufficient money to last at least three years. WHALE IN RIVER SYDNEY, June 17. A forty foot whale swam into the Richmond River, and caused a sensation when it collided with the ferry cables at Broadwater, while the ferry was in midstream, causing it to rock violently. Broadwater is sixteen miles from the river mouth. The whale became stranded on the mud flats. Attempts made to shoot it failed, the bullets making no impression. The whale later got back to deep water and was last seen heading for the sea.
