NELSON EDUCATION BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board was held at Nelson on Monday, all members being presen;. Accounts amounting to £7,422 were passed lor payment. The report of the sub-committee regarding a new site at Granity was' deterred for consideration. The executive committee were authorised to deal with the tenders for the erection of a new school at Waitalnp The following grants were made: — Ikamatua, £5; Appleby, £l4; Motueka £ll, to cover cost of roofing bicycle shed, which had been erected by the woodwork class of the Technical School. Pigeon Valley, £3/10/-; Summerlea £5; Central Takaka, £5; Waimangaroa, £3 further grant on ccnc.ition that the playground be put in good condition. The Rotokohu Committee asked for an increased grant towards ground improvement.— It was decided that owing to lack of funds it could not be granted. Several committees applied for grants for the erection of bicycle sheds, which was proving an expensive matter. —It was decided that in future the Board would not make provision lor the accommodation of bicycles of children who lived less than a mile from the schools. In connection with a recent application, eightcn of the children lived at distances of less than one mile, some lived only a quarter of a mile from the ground; on the other hand, some children rode up to seven miles to school. An application from the Buller branch of the N.Z.E.P. for authority to close certain schools on Friday, July 3, for the purpose of holding a meeting of teachers to discuss salaries and grading.—lt was decided that the Board reply, expressing regret that it could not grant the application, suggesting the teachers hold the meeting on a Saturday.

Mr .1. 11. Harkness was re-appointed the Board’s representative on the Westport Technical High School Board of .Managers. The Board, on the motion of Mr Scantlebury, passed a vote of sympathy to Mr W. B. Auld, chairman of the Reefton Committee, in his illness, and expressing the hope that he would have a speedy recovery. The Board also paid a tribute to Mr Auld’s work for the Reefton school. The following resignations were received and accepted:—Mr F. E. Eustace, sole teacher, Matai Valley; Miss P, M. Ticehurst, infant mistress, Lower Takaka.

Kotinga: sole teacher. 11 applicants—Mr R. G. Wealleans. Little Wanganui:- sole teacher, six applicants—Miss Elma Leger. Wham gamoa: sole teacher, 14 applicants— Miss Thelma Lonie. Owen River: sole teacher, three applicants—Miss Ivy Maxwell. Reefton D.H. School: Assistant mistress, two applicants—Miss A. E. Henry. Mapua: Assistant mis-

ti'ess, six applicants—Miss Ina Tiller. Tasman: .Assistant mistress, four applicants—Miss W. Blackman: REEFTON H.S. COMMITTEE. At the monthly meeting of the Reefton District High School Committee there were present: Messrs J. Panckhurst, C. Dobson, H. Campbell Panckhurst, C. Dobson, H. Camubell (secretary) and Mr F. S. Hayes, headmaster. Mr C. Cleaver was voted to the 'chair. An apology for absence was received from Mr W. B. Auld (chairman), and a motion of sympathy was passed to Mr Auld in his illness, and wishing him a speedy recovery.

The headmaster’s report stated: — Primary Department:. Roll number 1/5/36—93 boys, 77 girls; admitted, 2—4; withdrawn, I—2; roll at 5/6/36, 94 —79; average attendance 87.1 —70. Secondary Department: Roll number, 1/5/36—27 —19 ;■ admitted, 2 —. —; withdrawn, I—2; roll at 5/6/36 —28 — 17; average attendance, 25.5 —15.1 Repairs have been effected to the windews and doors. The half-yearly examinations will be held 'Within the next two weeks. An additional supply of coal has arrived. Herewith, I submit a list of books we need for the secondary library, some reference and some for general reading, and I trust the committee will authorise the purchase oi them.

The dental nurse reported: Total operations 98; total attendance 36; patients treated from Reefton, Reefton Convent and Black's Point schools. It was resolved to leave the matter of library books to the secretary and headmaster, and that the question of organising a concert' and dance be left with the beadmaster and staff. It was decided that Arbor Day this year be observed by the planting of trees to beautify the school grounds, and that again the public be invited to donate suitable trees and shrubs for that purpose.
