SOCCER

! MARIST—WAIUTA VICTORIES. Weather conditions were not of the best for the continuation of the Soccer competitions on Saturday. The rain held off, but a bitterly cold wind discouraged spectators. Notwithstanding this there were fair attendances at both senior fixtures. Marist, showing a continuation of good form defeated Taylorville by three goals to two, while Waiuta turned on a surprise in defeating Runanga, at Runanga. by the same margin. In the junior grade, Blackball had an easy win at the expense of Runanga, while Marist avenged their former defeat at the hands of Tech. Old Boys, after an even game. Tech, thirds defeated Runanga by two goals to one. MARIST 3, TAYLRVILLE 2.

This game was played at Taylorville and resulted in a great struggle. Playing -with the wind in the first half, Taylorville had slightly the better of the exchanges, and, at the interval, were leading by two goals to one. In the second spell, however, the bustling tactics of the greens began to tell, and they equalised and then took the lead. Taylorville made desperate efforts to regain the lead, and were unlucky not to score on more than one occasion but overeagerness cost them dearly. The Marist halves were again the mainstay of the team, and gave their forwards plenty of opportunities. Taylorville played well, and poorly by turn, at times showing fine understanding, and then again passing erratically. The teams were: — Taylorville: Pickering, White, Lee, Cowan, Rutherford, Miller, Coutts, Shortt, Tennant, Cameron, Bateman. Marist: Hall, Grogan, Marshall, Woods, J. Timlin, Anderson, Martin, Dargan, Pollock, Anthon, Lord.

From the kick off, Taylorville took up the, attack. Two lightning raids were repulsed, but they came again and after three minutes’ play scored the first goal of the match. Cameron sent in a high lob towards the goalmouth. Marshall got his head to the bull, but it went straight up in the air. and Short, coming through fast, got his foot to it, to send it hard into the net. Taylorville 1, Marist 0. Woods was penalised for hands, but the ball was kicked too hard, and went by. Marist came away, and good work by Anthon, Pollock. and Dargan saw Taylorville concede two corners in quick succession. Finally, Cowan relieved, and sent to Cameron, who kicked well downfield. The ball bounced over Marshall’s head, and Tennant looked dangerous, but Hall beat him to the ball, and relieved. Bateman received on the wing, and sent in a good cross, which Hall punched clear. Timlin received in midfield, and gave a long pass through tho centre to Pollock, who broke away to score a good goal. Taylorville 1, Marist 1.

Taylorville set out to regain the lead, and a good shot by Rutherford forced Hall to concede a. corner, Anderson clearing. Coutts and Short initiated a nice movement on the left, but Grogan and Woods combined well to clear. Rutherford received and lifted the ball with a high kick down the centre. Grogan misjudged it, and Tennant received with two forwards in support, but his pass went astray, and Marshall cleared. Taylorville kept up the pressure, and a great shot by Cameron missed by inches. Cameron received again, and crossed to Coutts. Marshall tackled him for the ball, and looked like clearing, but Coutts, with a clever effort, got his foot to the ball, to score a neat goal. Taylorville 2, Marist 1. Marist now had a spell on attack, and two good crosses by Lord looked dangerous, but the defence held and half-time saw no addition to the score.

Upon the resumption, play swung quickly from end to end, first one side then the other having the advantage. A good cross by Martin saw White nearly head into his own goal, but the resulting corner was fruitless. Anderson received forty yards out, but with all his forwards in position, failed to centre the first time, and Rutherford robbed him. Taylorville came away, but Marshall repulsed them with a long kick to Dargan, who, with a first-timer, missed narrowly. Pollock and Martin initiated a nice movement forcing Lee to concede a corner. From the resulting kick, the ball swerved to Pollock who got his foot to it and gave Pickering no chance. Marist 2, Taylorville 2.

Taylorville set about regaining the lead, and several fast raids kept the green backs busy. Then Short received, and passed through to Tennant, who broke away, and looked certain to score, but Grogan, coming from behind took the ball from his toe for a great save. Back came Marist and a high kick from Timlin saw a. melee in the Taylorville goal-mouth. Dargan received, and put in a good shot, but Pickering saved well. A good cross by Lord saw Martin just fail to get to the ball. Lee cleared, and Miller, Cameron and Short combined in a nice movement, but Short’s shot was just too high. Then Cameron received right in front, but his shot from fifteen yards out went astray. Timlin received in midfield, and sent the ball high into the goalmouth. Pickering stopped the shot, but failed to grip the ball which rebounded infield to Pollock. Lee blocked his shot, but Dargan received, and sent the leather into the corner of the net. Marist 3, Taylorville 2. Taylorville began to extent themselves in an endeavour to equalise, and for a long period held an advantage territorially, but the positional play which had characterised their early efforts was lacking, and overeagerness spoiled movements. Marshall and Grogan were playing good football, and received plenty of work to do. A nice cross by Bateman saw Tennant get a great opportunity, but he failed to control the ball and Anderson cleared. Taylorville pressed hotly, and gave the greens some anxious moments, before Timlin finally cleared to Pollock. The final whistle saw the score unchanged: Marist 3, Taylorville 2. WAIUTA 3, RUNANGA 2. / Waiuta notched their first win of the season, on Saturday, when they defeated Runanga by the odd goal in five, after an even struggle. Runanga were leading 2/1 al the interval. but, in the second spell, Waiuta played better football, and scored two further goals. Wall.c;, on the left wing, made the opening for two Waiuta goals, one of which he scored, the other being scored by Coulson. Coulson also scored again from a cross by Jobling. Maskill and Craig were the scorers lor Runanga. ■ JUNIOR GRADE.

At Blackball , on Saturday, the local eleven inflicted a severe defeat

on Runanga by 7 goals to 1. The game, however, was much more even than, the score would indicate, but the solid defence of the Blackball backs was too good for Runanga. Runanga travelled to Blackball with only eight men, completing their team with Blackball reserves.

MARIST 2, TECH. OLD BOYS 1

Marist and Tech, juniors met on the Recreation ground on Saturday, and an even game resulted. The first spell was scoreless, but early in the second half, Kerr opened Old Boys’ account. The greens, however, were not long in equalising, J. Mulqueen scoring a neat goal. Not three minutes later, he repeated his effort to place Marist in the lead. Play was fast, and willing, but no further scores resulted. For Marist, Hopkins, Mulqueen and the backs, played well, while Larking, Kerr and McFadgen were tho mainstay of the Old Boys’ team. THIRD GRADE. In a closely contested game at the Tech ground, on Saturday, the School team defeated Runanga by two goals to one.
