Mr A. E. Kilgour left, to-day, on a visit to Christchurch.

Mr. J. W. Greenslade left, this morning, on a visit to Christchurcli.

Mrs. A. Kyle returned on Saturday, from a visit to Auckland.

Miss C. K. Lane, who has been the guest of Mr and Mrs A. Lane, left, to-day, on return to Christchurch.

Mr L. B. Phillips, of Masterton, arrived on Saturday, on a visit to Grej mouth.

Rev. Father McMaster, C.SS.R., arrived on Saturday, from ChHstchurch. He will conduct a Mission at Hokitika, this week.

The death was announced by a Melbourne cablegram of Mr. William Allan Gibson, 67, general manager ot Goldsbrough Mort.

Guests at Revington’s include: — Messrs R. L. MacLachlan, J. D. Brodie, H. Elliott (Wellington), M. A. Legg (Christchurch).

Mr George Brittenden, Vvhose marriage to Miss C. M. Phillips, takes place at St. Patrick’s Church, to-mor-row morning, arrived on Saturday, from Invercargill.

Mr P. L. Bedwell of the Public Trust Department, has received notice of his transfer to Wellington. Mr R. T. Burt, of the Wellington office, will be his successor.

A London cablegram stated that Mr Bernard Shaw, after an amateur perlormance of “Candida" at Newcastle, said the time had come for him to retire from the footlights. That was his last public speech.

Two old residents of Greymouth, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Catlin, Tainui Street, yesterday celebrated their golden wedding. Owing to their failing healtn they spent a quiet day, only intimate friends being present to convey their congratulations.

The death has occurred (stated a Melbourne cablegram), of Sir John Bowner, politician, journalist and agriculturalist. He was in the Victorian Legislative Assembly for an unbroken period of thirty-five years. He was Speaker for three years, and for a brief period was Premier.

A Sydney cablegram announced the death of Mr Richard Watkins, aged 81. i He saw active service during the Great War and was, it is claimed, the oldest member of the A.I.F. He enlisted in 1915 at the age of 61. His statement that he was 41, was never questioned.

A London cablegram announced the death of Mr. G. K. Chesterton, author, journalist and lecturer. He was born in London in 1874. He wrote numerous bo )ks on a variety of subjects, was editor of “G.K.’s Weekly,” and as a satirist was prominent. “Father Brown” detective, was the hero of a popular series. Mr. Chesterton had various honours conferred on him.

A London cablegram announced the death of Major Arthur Henry Bathurst, of Lydney, Gloucestershire. He was a brother of Viscount Bledisloe, who was Governor-General of New Zealand from 1930 to 1935. During the greater part of Lord Bledisloe s term in New Zealand; the late Major Bathurst acted as his' Military Secretary.

Mr. Bernard E. Older, West Coast representative cf. the Atlantic Union Oil Company, has received notice of transfer to Auckland, and -will leave Greymouth about the end of this month. Mr. Older has been stationed on the West Coast for the past six and a-half years, and was formerly chief engineer at the Dobson power station. Mr. H. Dixon, of Taumarunui, has arrived to replace Mr. Older. He was well-known in the King Country as a wrestling referee.

The death occurred on Friday, at the ago of 73, of, the Provost of Eton, and the former Provost of King’s College, Cambridge, Dr. M. R. James, following a severe heart attack. He was ViceChancellor of Cambridge from 1913 to 1915. A scholar in more recondite branches of archaeology, whose learned works on ancient an,d medieval manuscripts appealed to specialists, ho also acquired popular fame as a writer of ghost stories. He received the Order of Merit in 1930. —Official Wireless.

The wedding of Mary Patricia, youngest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Patrick McDonnell, to Michael, eldest son of Mr and the late Mrs Henry Brown, of Greymouth, took place at St. Peter’s Church, Beckenham, on Wednesday last. Rev. Dr. Kennedy performed the ceremony. The bride, who was escorted by her uncle, Mr John McDonnell, wore a rose velvet ankle length frock, with hat and shoes to tone. She carried a. bouquet of pink chrysanthemums. Miss Johanna McDonnell, sister of the bride, was bridesmaid, and wore a Margaret Rose cloque frock, relieved with blue, and carried a pink and blue bouquet. The bridegroom’s brother, Thomas, was best man. After lhe ceremony, a reception .was held at Ballantyne’s, where the usual toasts were honoured. The newlymarried couple left for Dunedin for the honeymoon.
