COASTAL SERVICES

AUCKLAND, May 29

“Through unfair uneconomic competition, coastal shipping to-day is in a perilous position,” said Mr. Ernest Davis, chairman of directors of the Northern Steam Ship Company, Limited, at the annual meeting, this afternoon. “It is our hope that the Government will accord some measure of protection to this industry, which, equally with other services, has played its part in the development of our country, and provides a livelihood for many thousands., of workers.” Mr. Davis suggested to the Government that it should consider subsidising coastal shipping for carrying fertilisers at a low rate, in the same way as it subsidised the railways.
