CENSUS REVELATIONS.

WELLINGTON, May 29. The returns to hand for the census taken on March 24 are now sufficiently complete to disclose the total population then recorded: J h e r esults are provisional, being subject to correc tion on the final check, but it is unlikely that amendments of a serious nature will be required. The fiSureswhich are inclusive of Maoris, relate to New Zealand proper; that is, tnej do not cover the Dominion s Island Dependencies, viz., Cook Isl ‘ in Niue, Tokelau Island, and Western Samoa. _ Q , Q 9 The total population was 1,573,482, representing an increase of 165,340, or 11.74 per cent on the 1926 census. The figures for the North Island are: —Population, 1936 census, 1 017,766; numerical increase 19-6 1936 125,087; the increase in 1926— 1936,’ as a percentage of 1926, totals 14 Soitth Island (including Chatham Island and Stewart Island) Population 555,716; numerical increase, 40,256; percentage, 7.81. Total for New Zealand: Population 1,573,482; numerical increase 165,313; percentage (11.74). The rate of growth of population during the decade which elapsed between the 1926 and 1936 censuses is the lowest recorded for any decade ! in the history of New Zealand. It represents a heavy decline on the rate of growth recorded during the five years between the censuses of 1921 and 1926, when the population increased by 136,475, equal to 10.73 pel cent, of the 1921 total. The North Island now contains 64.68 ner cent, of New Zealand’s population, and the South Island 35.32 pei cent.' The corresponding percentages in 1926 were. 63.39 and 36.61, respectively.
