A London cablegram announced the death of Admiral Sir Cecil Thursby, “whose burly, thick-set figure and bulldog jaw were remembered by every Anzac, whose disembarkation he Covered at Gaba Tepe. Not only was he a fighting sailor, but a firstclass diplomat.” He was born in 1861, and entered the Navy in 1874.

A Christchurch Press Association message stated that C. Oliver, vicecaptain of the All Blacks, has been forced definitely to retire from Rugby owing to a groin injury, received on the tour, which has recurred at intervals. He has been training, in the hope of resuming play, but now must act on medical advice, and cease. So ends a remarkable football career, which started when Oliver won his Canterbury cap as a youth of nineteen, in 1924.
