WELLINGTON HARBOUR BOARD

[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.]

WELLINGTON, May 27

Mr. D. J. McGowan was unanimously elected chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board at the annual meeting to-day. Mr. McGowan has been a member for the past 13 years. The Board decided to restore the remaining balance of the ten per cent, cut to the permanent staff, and the regular casual employees. The restoration is retrospective to April 1. The amount involved was stated to be something like £4,000 annually.

COUNTY CHAIRMEN

WELLINGTON, May 27

The Hutt County Council torday reelected Cr. D. R. Hoggard, as Chairman.

The Makora County Council to-day re-elected Mr. R. G. Mexted, as Chairman.

INVERCARGILL, May 27.

Mr. F. F. Trapski was elected chairman of the Southland County Council at the annual meeting to-day. Mr. G. Stroud was elected chairman of Wallace County Council.

MERGER PROPOSALS

WELLINGTON, May 27. Hon. W. Parry definitely announced this morning that he will bring down local government legislation this year, alter next month’s break in the session. The Bill will not make any amalgamations compulsory, but will only provide the means of bringing about this desirable qnd.
