TOKIO, May 27
The rayon and cotton representatives of eight associations, after a joint meeting, issued a statement denouncing the Australian tariff revision, and urging the Government to take decisive action, pledging mutual cooperation. M. Sakatani, president of the Aus-tralian-Japan Society, has cabled to Canberra to the Prime Minister, Mr. J. A. Lyons, and Sir H. Gullett (Trade Minister), saying: “Deeply regret tariff decision. It is aggravating trade relations. Apprehend grave future developments.” The directors of the Japanese Woollen Industry Association, comprising 26 companies, have decided tentatively, and subject to approval, to . restrict their coming season’s Australian wool buying to 250,000 bales, and to buy the remainder of their wool from South Africa, New Zealand, and South America.
The spokesman at the Japanese Foreign Office estimates that the Japanese exports of cotton good to Australia will cease entirely, as a result of the tariff change, except for materials like wheat sacks. The export of rayon goods is expected to decline by 80' per cent. The spokesman added: “Australia is a paradise. It is rich in natural resources. Japan is different. The stopping of our export of manufactured goods means the stopping of our national life.”
