PARTICULARS OF MATCHES
(Recd. May 28, noon.) LONDON, May 27.
In the British amateur golf championship. the first sensation of the day was Tolley’s lapse against the Welshman, Roberts. Tolley went out with a majestic .36. Then there was a landslide in Roberts’ favour, Tolley going all to pieces. Roberts took three putts at the 17th., and permitted Tolley to square. Tolley missed a three-foot putt at the 18th., but at the 19th he sank a seven-yarder, for the match.
A great crowd accompanied Ferrier against Braddon, a member of the advertising staff of a London evening newspaper, who is essaying his first championship. He plays a beautiful ball, and is very accurate in approach play. Both went out in 38, and turned all square. Ferrier lost the next three holes, being off the line with his drives, but he won the next two, through Braddon taking three putts at each green. Ferrier holed a four-yarder at the 15th, and a three-yarder at the 16th, to get halves, and downed a fouryarder at the 17th, to square the match. The eighteenth was halved, when Ferrier failed to sink a threevarder. Both had magnificent drives at the 19th, and both had superb seconds to four yards from the pin. Ferrier had the first putt, and laid the ball just at the edge of the hole. Braddon seemed nervous, and took three putts of short distances, so Ferrier won. He was visibly showing signs of strain, and said: “It was a desperate struggle. I was lucky to get through.”
The Scottish champion, Hamilton, went down to the former Oxford champion, Morrice. The English champion had a very tough fight to beat the Irishman. Gill. The defeat of McLean in the fourth round, was most surprising. Sweeny,a London-American, was three up at the 11th, then dormie two. McLean won the last two and halved the 19th, but Sweeny won the 20th.
Tweddell’s defeat was surprising, as he had just been chosen to captain Britain against America. Thomas played brilliantly, and was five under fours for 16 holes. Ferrier gave a magnificent display against Howell, eight times Welsh champion. The Australian simply overwhelmed the Welshman, driving an enormous length, his second shots covering the pin. Ferrier was out in 34, his figures being 4,3, 4,4, 4,4, 3,4, and turned five up. He did the next four holes in 4,3, 4, 4. Howell made some slips, occasionally taking three putts, but he was devastated by his opponent’s finer golf. GREYMOUTH LADIES The Coronation medal and Aotea Roa cup competition was played on Tuesday under excellent conditions. Mrs. W. G. McKay played exceedingly veil doing 95 —23—72, reducing her handicap.
