RUNANGA ROUT TAYLORVILLE The weather was cold, but fine for the continuation of the Soccer competitions during the week-end. and the grounds were in good order, though a shower of rain at Waiuta before the match on Sunday was responsible for some mis-kicking. In the senior competition, Runanga turned on a surprise by decisively defeating Taylorville. by six goals to two. At Waiuta, Marist and the home team played a drawn match after a great struggle. In the junior competition. Technical Old Boys and Blackball were successful in accounting for Cobden and Runanga respectively.

MARIST 2. WAIUTA 2

This mutch was played at Waiuta on Sunday, and resulted in a great struggle. The game started off at a furious pace, and both sides had scored twice before the interval. As the game progressed, however. the defence became more solid, the halves dropping back more and more trequently. with their backs, with the result that although some clever pieces of forward play were witnessed, and the spectators were kept on their toes right till the final whistle, neither side could break through in the second spell. The score, two all. was a failindication of the run of the play.

The teams were: — Marist: Hall, Grogan. Dargan, Woods, W. Timlin, Anthon, Lord, Gough, Bayley, J. Timlin, Martin. Waiuta: Rose, Parkinson, KeenanWoods, Jack Young. Jim Young. Dunshea. Walker, Wilson, Luke. Jobling. Marist won the toss and. according to custom —it being the first home match of the season at Waiuta —Mrs. J. Scott kicked off for Waiuta. Marist were first to come away. Martin crossing nicely, but Jack Young clearled well down to Walker, who tried a shot from well out, but Hall was safe. ) Waiuta kept up the pressure, and DunIshea, Wilson and Luke were associated in a line movement, which seemed as though it would be rewarded with a goal when Hall leapt for the ball to make a great one-handed save. Walker, Luke and Wilson gave the Marist backs some warm moments, before Woods finally broke away. J. Timlin received and sent to Anthon who passed through to Bayley for him to rush in and net. only to be ruled off-side. Marist came again, however. Timlin placing to Martin, who. after a good run, lobbed the ball over Parhim on's head for Bayley to nip in and score a neat goal. Marist 1. Waiuta 0.

Waiuta now took up the attack, and pressed hotly. Wilson sent in a great shot, but Hall just managed to get to the ball. He fumbled and Waiuta appeared through when he retrieved himself well lo concede a corner. Grogan cleared Waiuta came back, and Dixon forced Anthon lo concede' a corner. Dunshea crossed the ball beautifully to the goal-mouth and Wilson got his head to it to score a tine goal. Waiuta 2, Marist 1.

Spurred by this reverse. Marist attacked furiously and were not long before they were rewarded. Anthon received in midfield, and. after a tricky run down the centre, passed through to Bayley, who put in a hard shot. Rose got his hands to the ball, but it was too greasy for him to hold, and slipped into the net. Marist 2, Waiuta 2; Half-time sounded shortly afterwards. Waiuta pressed upon resumption and forced Marist to concede three corners

in succession, which, however, provejl fruitless. Dargan and Grogan were playing well on defence, and managed to keep the goal clear, though Waiuta. at this stage were pressing hotly, and were a shade unlucky not to score on several occasions. W. Timlin finally kicked, and play centred in midfield for a period. Waiuta broke through, but Hall coming from, goal beat Jack Young in a race for the bail, and cleared. Waiuta again took up the attack. | but Dargan cleared. W. Timlin placed the ball high over the full-back’s head, and Bayley rushed through to beat the keeper and net. to be again ruled cffside. Fast up and down play now J ensued. 'Waiuta having somewhat the better of the exchanges. Marist were finding the wet ball hard to control. and a deal of mis-kicking in midfield, gave their backs some uneasy moI ments. In the last quarter, Marist did better, and a good cross by Lord saw Bayley miss narrowly. Gough and Anthon put in some good work, but the Waiuta defence was solid. Martin crossed the (ball hard and low. the back mis-kick-ed and the ball rolled right across the goal mouth, but no Marist forward was quick enough to seize the opening. and Young cleared. Playing at Dunollie on Saturday,| Runanga beat Taylorville by six goals! to two The first half oi the game was even, the score at half-time being one-nil in Runanga’s favour, but in the second spell, the home team had things much their own way. Shortly after the commencement of the game. Runanga broke through to score, but were ruled offside. Success came their way soon afterwards, however, vs hen Pickering failed to hold a long shot from Shotton, and the ball slipped into the net. There was no further score in the first spell. In the second half, Runanga quickly ran up a formidable total of goals. First White broke through, then Malpass. then Maskill, then Craig 'and. then Malpass. Taylorville fought back grimly, and not without some success, first Cameron and then Coutts finding the net, but they could not hope to reach Runanga’s tally, and the game ended Runanga 6. Taylorville 2. For Runanga Armstrong. Adamson and Malpass were outstanding, while Rutherford. Cameron and Coutts played well for Taylorville.

JUNIOR GRADE. BLACKBALL 2 v. RUNANGA 1. In a junior grade fixture at Dunollie, on Saturday, Blackball defeated Runanga by two goals to one, after an even ami exciting game.

OLD BOYS 7, v. COBDEN 1. At the Recreation on Saturday ( Tech. Old Boys easily accounted for the Cobden juniors running out winners bv seven goals to one. Cobden were not at full strength, and were

forced to call on several third grade players. For Old Boys. Cruse (2).| Airns (.”> ). and Mclntyre (2), were j the scorers, and McLean scored Cobden’s only goal. The game was not as one-sided as the score would indicate. Cobden, owing their vulnerability to the failure of their halves to keep their positions. J. Kerr played.i an outstanding game for Cobden, while I the Paton brothers worked well together for Ohl Boys. THIRD GRADE. The third grade fixture Cobden v.
