UNITED v. RUNANGA The United and Runanga Debating Clubs met in the first contest of the season, under the auspices of the West Coast Debating League, on Saturday evening, at. the United Club rooms, Mr. A. J. McDowall presiding over an attendance of twenty-five. The subject for the “A” teams was “'That Sanctions are a Menace to Peace and Goodwill among Nations,” and the judge, Mr. S. W. S. Strong, awarded the points as follow: —United (aff.) A. J. McDowall 85, (reply 14), I) C. Milne 85, R. R. Dawber 73. J. Booth 86, team work 12; total 355. Runanga: S. Braithwaite 79 (reply 7 II) J. Unwin' S 3. T. Walker 7-1. J. Kelly 81. team work 16; total 344. The “B“ teams debate, “That the redistribution of colonial possessions is now just and practicable” was won by Runanga. the judge, Mr. D. C. Milne, awarding the points as follow: Runanga (neg.): L. Cook 77 (reply 15), T. Shaw 74, S. Burgess 71. D. Barnes 78. team work 16: total 331. United: G. F. Page SO (reply 15), C. C. Mosley 70, A. H. Ihle 67. S. W. S. Strong 76, team work 14; total 322. The judges reviewed the speeches and gave ' helpful” suggestions and criticisms. ..... RUNANGA CLUB. The weekly meeting of the Runanga Debating Club was held on Thursday evening. ..it. T. Walker presided otei a good attendance. One member resigned and one new member was received. A programme was drawn up for a social to be held in the Presbyterian Hall this week. The following items were given during the, evening: A. Airns, “The Volunteer Organist”, Len Cook “Cromwell and Wolsev, T. Walker “Bottles”, J. Unwin “Books.” T. Kelly “Soliloquy on Sleep,” J. Smith “Freedom”, Thos. Shaw “Essay on Union,” T. Dale “Yarn of the Nancy Bell,” W. Caldwell “Essay on Trade Unions,” S. Burgess (prepared reading) “Britain s Dominions,” D. Barnes (prepared reading) “Community Life," S. Harris “Independent Man”, S. Braithwaite Mussolini’s Mandate.” The Judge, Mr. L. Dale, gave some criticisms of the various speakers.
