The meaning which the words “a keen, shrewd business man” once conveyed has gone, according to Mr. C. J. Lovegrove, who addressed the Auckland Creditmen’s Club at a luncheon. He spoke of the disappearance of the distinctions, etlycad and otherwise, between business and the learned professions. In defining a profession, an important point was that the amount of financial gain was not accepted as the measure of success achieved. This had been the great abyss between business and the professions. Everyone could remember tlie time when a deal of questionable character, but just within the law was taken with a mere shrug of the shoulders, and ihe party was described as “a. keen, shrewd business man.” To-day, however, things had changed, said Mr. Lovegrove, and the perpetrator of a deal such as that was likely to be ostracised by the business world.
