WESTRALIAN BY-ELECTION
MINISTER DEFEATED [by cable—press assn.—copyright.) (Recd. May 11, Noon) PERTH, May 11. The East IPerth by-election for the Legislative Assembly resulted in the defeat of the Minister for Employment (Mr. J. Kenneally) by T. Hughes (Independent) by a majority of 1404 votes. At the general election, last February. 'Mr. Hughes defeated Mr. Kenneally by 199 votes. Last January, a sequestration order was, secured against Hughes’ estate. The question of Mr. Hughes’ eligibility to sit in Parliament after having been bankrupt, then arose', and Mr. Kenneally started Court proceedings. Mr. Hughes paid the money he owed, and the Court discharged the sequestration order. When Kenneally persisted with the appeal, Mr. Hughes resigned the seat, and the appeal was discontinued. AS the result of the new election on Saturday, the Labour Government now lias a majority of one.
