GREEK STRIKERS
CLASHES WITH TROOPS [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] SALONIKA, May 9. Thirty persons are reported to have been killed, including women, and over one hundred wounded in street fighting here. The fighting followed on an extension of a strike of twentyfive thousand tobacco workers throughout Macedonia. Railway and tramway workers and others became sympathetically involved, because the Government called the railwaymen to the colours, in order Io maintain communications. The strikers barricaded the streets, and flew the red flag. The police tried to dispense the mob by firing revolvers The rioters, however, speedily reassembled. They attacked the police with stones and cafe chairs. 3'he Government declared martial law and dispatched troops with tanks and armoured cars to the. scene. whi<’l> charged the barricades. Six were killed in attempting to rush an armourei cAr. which opened fire. A three-hour battle ended with the rout oi the Artillery, machine guns, and infantry are now posted in the stre ® The trouble began on Friday, when the ; strikers clashed with the police, seventy being injured.
