SYDNEY CHURCHES’ COUNCIL
ANGLICAN WITHDRAWAL. I — i [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.j SYDNEY, May 6.| The Standing Committee of ,tlj> Church of England for the diocese of Sydney has recommended to the Synod that it should make its withdrawal from the Council of Churches. '£ The reasons for this are embodied in a letter from Rt. Rev. Doctor Mowll, the Archbishop of Sydney, who expresses tlie opinion that the Council! of Churches “did not, and could not, voice the mind of the Church of England.” u The Archbishop states that individual members of the Church of England serving on the Council, were not able, as such, to speak for the Church of England on moral and religious questions. The Church of England believed that any question considered by the Council of Churches should bg referred to the denoininational authorities before the Council made any public announcement on it. The Council has decided to refer the matter to its executive committee for a report.
