BRUNNER NOTES

[our own correspondent.] The Brunner Borough Council met in the Council Chambers. Present: The Mayor (Mr. J. Smeaton), Councillors W. Gutberlet, W. Barber, R. Fordham and D. Mclvor. An apology for absence was received from Cr. A. McLagan. A request made by Mr. P. Trehey for improvements to the road leading to his farm was granted. The Overseer’s rtport was received as satisfactory. Inward correspondence was received and dealt with as follows: — Building application from W. Barber. —Granted. C. F. Moffit, applying for permission to make use of portion of unused cemetery reserve at Stillwater.

—Permission granted, a. rental of £1 per year to be charged. New Zealand Railways advised that tapering platform at Brunner railway station will be painted white at ah early date. Taylorville Soccer Club, application for permission for use of Taylorville Recreation Reserve for Saturday play during the season. —Permission granted on the same terms as the Brunner League Club. 1 The Treasury forwarded Order-in-Council consenting to loan of £594.

It was resolved that those responsible be requested not to post any further picture bills on the Salvation Army Board in Taylorville, and to remove immediately those at present there. Accounts and wages, £l2B/8/S, were passed for payment. A meeting of the Brunner Returned Soldiers’ Association was held at Wallsend last evening. Mr. R. McGuinness presided over an attendance of twenty-four. It was decided to hold Poppy Day to-morrow (Saturday). May 2. ’ The President and secretary(Mr. W. Gutberlet) were appointed delegates to the annual meeting of the . Greymouth R.S.A., on Thursday even-' ing next. The annual meeting was fixed for May 14. The Taylorville School Committee held a successful card party in the school on Tuesday evening. The winners were: —Mrs. E. Dando 1, Mrs. P. Moore 2. Wallsend mine worked four shifts this week and three last week. Dobson worked four this week, and five the previous week. At the householders’ meeting at Taylorville, Mr. T. W. Morgan presided over a large attendance. The Chair-

man and Headmaster both reported on the work of the year. It was pointed out that the status of the school.had ! fallen, owing to the reduced attendance, and prompt action by the committee had been necessarv to ensure the retention of three teachers. In spite of drawbacks, the school continued to maintain a high standard, both in the examination room and on’ the sports field. Both reports were approved by the meeting. Mr. F. Williams congratulated the committee and Headmaster on the results at-

tained. The chairman, secretary and headmaster briefly acknowledged Mr. Williams’ eulogy. Ten nominations for the new committee were received, namely: Messrs. L. Dando, R. J. Le Cren, T. W. Morgan, R. R. Smith, F. Slater, W. Coates, C. Buckman, J. Daglish, P. Moore and J. Myers. A ballot resulted in the election of Messrs. Dando, Smith, Slater, Morgan and Le Cren. After the

candidates had returned thanks a resolution was passed instructing the new committee to call a meeting on a date to be selected, to discuss the formation of a Home and School Association . The newly elected committee met atfer the close of the householders’ meeting, and elected Mr. Morgan as chairman, Mr. Smtih as secretary and Mr. Le Cren as treasurer.
