To-day’s Racing News

Galloping meetings” to come. May 2, 4.—Nelson. May 7, 9. —Egmont. May 8, 9. —Marlborough. May 9. —Amberley. Over the Fences: Knight of Australia was schooled over the pony hurdles at Ellerslie on Tuesday, and gave a satisfactory display. He is in great heart, after the Autumn meetings. Making Good Progress: The aged gelding Lord Vai has made good progress during the short time he has been in work at Ellerslie, following a spell extending over several months. So far he has not been allotted any fast galloping, but he is well forward and will be in good order to compete at the approaching winter meetings. Lord Vai is in his element when the going is heavy, though it is doubtful if he is as good as formerly.

Addition to Stable: . A four-year-old filly by Whirlwind from Madam Lucullus is the latest addition to L. W. Jillings’ stable at Auckland. She has only been ridden a few times, but is a likely-looking sort and is not lacking as far as size and conformation are concerned. The new-comer ranks as a half-sister to Reviver, who was very speedy, though a bit unreliable. ?

Novice Showing Promise: Since joining A. Quinlivan’s stable the Catmint gelding Golden Spahi has had several schooling lessons over the pony hurdles at Ellerslie and has acquitted himself in a satisfactory manner. When raced on the flat a few seasons ago Golden Spahi showed any amount of speed, and would only need to jump correctly in order to pay his way in minor hurdle and hunters events later on. Golden Spahi had his first qualifying run at Papatoetoe.

In Berth Of ?the horses entered for the Great Northerns no fewer than 19 include the dual engagement. They are Master Musk, Woodful, Manawatu, Imperial iPrince, Golden England, Rasouli, Royal Limond, Spalpiko, Scotch Nation, Valpeen, Thespis, Diamond, Roxy, King's Archer, Booklaw, Wee Pat, ‘London, Indolent and Pahu.

The Surgeon: The veteran Ashburton trainer, J. J. Lewis, is remaining at Riccarton to prepare The Surgeon for winter racing. The -Surgeon was one of the chief sufferers from the milling that occurred prior to the start ot the C.J.C. Great Autumn Handicap, and he was badly served at -the start. ,

Princess Doreen: Mr. S. E. Hill, of Wellington, has disposed of the five-year-old, Chief WRuler-Doree mare, Princess Doreen, the -Elderslie Stud, and she will probably ; be mated with SolicitorGeneral, ■ a son of Blandford. Princess Doreen, -who was the best two-year-old ofiher time, and won among valuable ,races, 'the Winter Cup, traces back to "Wallace, on her dam’s side. She won about £3,000 in stakes, being one .of the fastest horses in the country -in recent years, but on account of various troubles was not always seen at her best.

Setback to Diamond: The fine steeplechaser Diamond is at .present unable to do serious work owing to the injuries he received in his fall at Ellerslie, and he will be missing from the Egmont fields. He has made sufficient recovery to resume exercise, but no risks are to be taken with him. The enforced, break in his preparation has come at an unfortunate time. His Ellerslie rider, F. Thompson, also suffered extensive bruising and injury in the fall, and his shoulder, which had been similarly hurt previously, may take 'some weeks yet to mend.

Marcus Cicero: When T. R. George returns from Nelson to Trentham next week, he will probably take with him the now rising five-year-old Marcus Cicero (Hunting Song—Oratress), who has been spelling there since his unsuccessful trip to Australia as an early three-year-old. Marcus Cicero, who is owned by Mr. R. J. Murphy, gave much promise as a juvenile, winning the C.J.C. Autumn Nursery Handicap at his last appearance at that age. NELSON—FIRST DAY. Michael, and its trainer-driver, E. Harpley. The stewards reported that Wilveranj, which lined up for the Progressive Handicap at Victoria Park Trots last Monday, stood on the mark and took no part in the race. This was due, according to the driver, to the stay on the offside of his sulky becoming disconnected.
