■ ’QUAKE RELIEF GRANT. [I'EK PEESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, April 30. Representations which have been made for a grant of £45,000 to assist in the rehabilitation of the Karamea farmers, whose properties were damaged by the 1929 earthquake, are now' being considered by the Government. The proposal was mentioned in an urgent question, asked in the House of Representatives, this afternoon, by Mr. Holyoake, who sought information about the decision of the Government. The Prime Minister assured Mr. Holvoake that the proposal had been considered by the Government, and lie hoped to be able to make a final reply within the next few days. When the last Government went out of office arrangements had been made to provide £45,000 to settlers in Karamea, provided they would find an additional £5,000 necessary for work, whi’ch includes repairs to damage done by rivers. The settlers tooK the attitude, however, that the Government should provide the full amount, because they were already heavily burdened with taxation and expenses incidental to losses, and would be unable to finance the loan necessary to raise £5,000. The representations made to I the Government have been along those lines.. .
