FRAUD CONVICTIONS

EX-DETECTIVE INCLUDED. [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] SYDNEY, April 30. John Ellis Findlay, who was formerly a detective; Ernest Coombe, agent, and Charles Tanser. agent, were convicted at the ciuarter sessions to-daj' on the charge that, together with William Campbell, who pleaded guilty, they had conspired to defraud the public in respect of the preparation known as “chargol,” for the revitalising of motor-car batteries. The trial has occupied nine days. The prisoners were remanded for sentence. Each denied being concerned in fraud in connection with the formation of the company for the marketing of chargol. Both Findlay and Coombe denied receiving money from Campbell. The Deputy Commissioner of Police J. Lynch, giving evidence on behalf of Findlay, described him as a capable officer while in the police. The latter, he said, had also acted as Secretary for several big police functions. Lynch said that he heard rumours of defalcations of police funds, but there was nothing official.
