ALLIANCE OF LABOUR

I AIM AT COMPLETE UNITY. The annual conference of the New Zealand Alliance. of Labour, which was held in the Trades Hall, Wellington, opened on April 7 and terminated yesterday, after dealing with a very heavy agenda paper (says the “Evening Post.”) It also dealt with the Bill amending the I.C. and A. Act, brought down by the Hon. H. T. Armstrong. Minister of Labour, and suggested amendments to the Shops and Offices Act, and other industrial legislation. An official report sates that the conference was attended by representatives from all the national organisations affiliated to the Alliance of Labour, and in addition by representatives from its Auckland, Waihi, Wanganui, Wellington, Christchurch, Timaru, and Dunedin district councils. “It was the most widely representative conference yet held of the Alliance of Labour. The conference admitted a number of new affiliations and amended its rules giving wider powers to the district councils ,the effect of which Will relieve a considerable amount of work previously carried on by tile, head office. “The question of bringing about complete unity in the industrial movement was given careful consideration, and the obstacles to unity so far as the Alliance of Labour is concerned were removed by the conference ,and it is confidently antcipateci that in the near future there will be complete unity in the industrial movement, of this Dominion, which is deemed essential if the Government is to have the fullest co-operation in implementing its industrial policy. “The following officers were unanimously elected for the ensuing year: — Mr. L. Glover, president; Mr. F. P. Walsh, vice-president; Mr. A. W. Croskery, secretary-treasurer. “Mr. A. W. Croskery, the newlyappointed secretary-treasurer, is held in the highest esteem by all sections of the trade union movement, of which he is one of the oldest officials. He is also recognised as an authority on industrial law, and it is anticipated that his appointment will materially assist in bringing about the much-hoped-for reconciliation amongst the various industrial factions.”
