The death occurred this week at Balfour, Otago, of Mr. Charles Frederick Rowley, who was at one time a well-known figure throughout the greater part of the world. The older generation will remember “Sequah,” the travelling “medicine man,” who enjoyed a remarkable reputation before and after the turn of the present century. The late Mr. Rowley, who was 70 years old, began his career as a medicine man at the age of 19 years, and shortly afterwards adopted the title of “Sequah,” an American-Indian name for medicine man. He travelled in almost every country, finally settling down at Balfour seven years ago. The tragic death of his only daughter, who was killed in an accident a year ago, was a big.shock to him. and since then his health had failed rapidly. He leaves a widow, formerly Miss Ann Batty, of Yorkshire, whom he married in 1907, and who acted as his nurse and secretary on many of his travels.
