DANGEROUS CROSSINGS

ELIMINATION PROGRESS REPLY TO CRITICISM [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, March 13. A statement as to the progress on the elimination of dangerous level crossings throughout New Zealand, was made to-day by the Minister of Railways (Hon. D. G. Sullivan), in reply to Press criticism in Christchurch, which mentioned that a programme for the joint action was discussed by the Main Highways Board, the Railways Board, and the Unemployment Board, last July, and voiced the hope that, in the change of administration, the work would not drop out of view.

In reply, the Minister said that 34 crossings were selected as requiring attention first, and of these 23, regarded as most urgent, were approved for the commencement of the programme, it being considered that this portion of the programme would take approximately 18 months to complete. The position reached in respect of each of the 23 crossings is as follows: — Auckland district: Hoteo, draft plans •just completed, proposing a road diversion, eliminating two crossings, instead of an over-bridge, eliminating crossing one. Tirau, surveys in hand. Waihi, construction of overbridge in progress. Te Kauwhata, plans in hand. Huapai, plans in hand. Taupiri, plans in hand. Tarukenga, survey in hand. Wanganui district: Oio, Piriaka, Kai Iwi, and Mokoia, plans in hand. Normanby, surveys in hand. Wellington district:' Porirua, Paraparaumu, and Longburp, .field work in hand. Maharahara, plans, prepared for road diversion. Christchurch district: Styx, proposals practically complete and the work should be advertised shortly. Sockburn, plans are well forward and proposals should be completed in the next three weeks. Brunner, a small amount of field data required for the completion of plans. Steel has been ordered. Dunedin district: Deborah, subway to. be provided. Steel for an overbridge has been ordered, and as soon as this comes to hand the work can be commenced. Kartigi, ramp is in hand, and bridge plans are well forward. Palmerston, survey in hand. Invercargill .district: Lorneville, plans are in course of preparation.
