NAZIS AND CATHOLICS

MANY ARRESTS MADE [by CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] (Rec. February 12, 11 a.m.) BERLIN, February 11. The Church and State conflict is again coming into the foreground. Secret police struck another blow at the Catholic Youth Organisations, when they arrested Monseignor Volker, President, and also about fifty other important officials. It is believed that the arrests reflect the Nazi impatience over the compromise with the Church on the youth question, and are regarded as a step towards the suppression of all lay Catholic activity.

CARDINAL’S BROADCAST MUNICH, February 11. Two of the largest churches in Munich were crowded to hear Cardinal Faulhaber denounce anti-Catholic tendencies of Nazism, and the un-Chris-tian influence brought to bear on youthful members of the Nazi party. The sermon was relayed from the church in which the Cardinal preached. Thousands waited to see the Cardinal and ex-Crown Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria arrive. The streets were impassable. Isolated individuals, attempting to shout “Heil Hitler,” were quickly suppressed.

LABOUR FRONT. (Received February 12, 1 p.m.) BERLIN, February 11. Inaugurating a training course for Nazi political leaders, the Reich's leader. Doctor Frauenfelder.. said: — Nothing can be done by only shouting “Heil Hitler.” We must now act in accordance with the principles of our movement by organising a labour front.
