The Liverpool mine will work tomorrow, but the James Mine will be idle. The Arbitration Court, with Mr Justice Page as Chairman, will sit at Greymouth on February 19, at Reefton on February 21 and 22, and at Westport on February 24.

After the Cabinet meeting yesterday, Hon. M. J. Savage said that the Government plans were coming to finality. “But there is still some distance to go,”, he said. At th© request of the Greymouth Waterside Workers’ Union and with tho concurrence of the shipping companies, the Greymouth Harbour Board has decided to provide in the watersiders” shad, accommodation for the payment of the men. The estimated cost is £l5. The engineer was instructed at last evening’s Board meeting to give the matter early attention.

Requests from the Shipwreck Relief Society and the Canterbury Progress League for donations, the latter on behalf of the proposed memorial to the late Sir Arthur Dudley Dobson, were received by the Greymouth Harbour Board last evening. The Shipwreck Relief Society was given £lO HO/-, but tire Board regretted it had no funds for the other project.

A Chinese who appeared as a witness in the Magistrate’s Court on Monday (says the Nelson Mail) had taken the usual oath when the Magistrate, Mr. T. E. Maunsell, interrupted. “What religion are you?” he questioned witness. Witness looked nonplussed and the question was repeated. Witness brightened. “Oh, I’m a fruiterer,” was the unexpected reply.

The fortnightly meeting of the Star of the West Lodge, U.A.0.D., No. 36, was held last evening, A.D. Bro. W. A. Sheppard presiding over a fair attendance. The surgeon reported on sick members, and sick pay amounting to £22/14/8, and four maternity claims were passed for payment. Two candidates were ballotted for, and will be initiated at next meeting. P.A. Bro. J. Booth, presented Bro. J. Morgan with his P.A. Diploma.

In referring to the death of his late Majesty, King George V., at the 1 monthly meeting of the Greymouth Harbour Board last evening, the chairman, Mr. P. J. McLean, said the lata Sovereign had set a great example to the nation. Members stood in silent tribute.

Mrs. Ryan, Secretary of the Westport Labour Party, has received the following telegram from Hon. P. C. Webb, Minister of Mines: —“In regard to Westport sittings of the Supreme Court, my colleague stated that he bad the assurance of the Judges that, on the application of counsel they would sit at Westport for the hearing of all cases where the requirements of justice call' for such a sitting. Counsel of the litigants should, therefore, make direct application to the Circuit Judge.” Mr. Webb adds that it would be useless sending a deputation to Wellington if this procedure is not followed.

A scheme to develop the kauri gum workings on a 5000-acre block of Crown lands between Maropiu and'the West Coast, including the Wai Iwi Lakes district, is now being undertaken by the Government, a party of ( six men having been set to work to investigate the prospects (says the “New Zealand Herald”). The new process of refining kauri gum recently developed by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research is thought to have a bearing on the matter. It is probable that operations will be extended to other blocks of Crown lands in North Auckland, in which there are many large undeveloped areas known to be rich in kauri gum.

The Parliamentary Session is to open on March 5, and as the Labour Government has now taken control of the Dominion, optimistic predictions are general, it being considered that there is now some real prospect of turning that famous “corner.” Business everywhere is improving and a healthier tone is apparent in the commercial world.
