“NIGGER CANNON’S” IDENTITY. The holder of the ticket, “Nigger Cannon,” No. 190748, winner of the second prize in the “Lucky New Year Art Union,” is Mr. Alfred Smith, who resides with his wife and family of two children, in Doyle Street, Blaketown. Mr. Smith, who is working on the construction of the aerodrome on Preston Road, is a native of Mancheester, England. On Wednesday last, he booked a passage for himself and family for England, and is to leave Greymouth on March 17. He is not in good circumstances, and stated this morning, that in all probability .had he not booked his passage, he-might have decided against leaving for England. Mr. Smith was formerly a. member of the Greymouth Municipal Band, and

while with that combination won the Nev.- Zealand cornet championship at a, Dominion contest at Wanganui. Questioned as to tiro origin of the nom-de-plume, Mr. Smith stated that he put it down in memory of a Sergeant Cannon, in the First Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers, with which he (Mr. Smith) served during the war. Cannon was known as “Nigger” on account of his dark complexion. H-a stated taht he bought the ticket from Mr. J. H. Critchley, at Greymouth, about Christmas time. FIVE POUND PRIZE-WINNERS.
