Galloping

MEETINGS TO COME.

Feb. B—Taranaki8 —Taranaki J.C. Feb. B—Poverty Bay Turf Club. Feb. 8 —Canterbury J.C. Feb. 8, 10 —Rotorua R.C. Feb. 13, 15—Egmont R.C. Feb. 13, 15 —Dunedin J.C. Feb. 20—Tolaga Bay J.C. Feb. 21, 22 —Woodville D.J.C. Feb. 21, 22 —Winton J.C. Feb. 22 —Waiapu R.C. Feb. 22, 24 —Waikato R.C. Feb. 26—Opunake R.C.

Sales of Sto.ck: There will be a dispersal sale today at the late Mr J. O’Brien’s Oamaru stud and a further sale of young horses at the Dunedin meeting.

Improving youngster:. Impersonator, the full-brother to Copvist, rail three courses in the two-year-old handicaps at Trentham. For all that, he has been written up ? as an improved youngster, and he will have his chance in the Lyttelton Plate.

Riders at New Plymouth: B H. Morris is riding Spiral and Rust for Mr G. M. Currie at New Plymouth. R. Reed wias engaged for Movie Star, Grand Jury, and Martinborough.

Bad Luck: . Mr L. Paul, of Wanganui, has had the bad luck to lose his two horses, Abracadabra and Alcides, during the past few days with broken legs. Alciues, who broke down iiF his race at Stratford on January 4, was turned out for a spell when he was found with his injured leg.

One Race Enough: ■Acceptable won the sprint race on the first day at Wanganui in dashing style, but those who made him favourite for the second day overlooked his record, which shows fairly clearly that he is a first-up horse. Indeed, it was the original intention of Mr R. J. Murphy not to run bim on Saturday, says “The Watcher.”

AEay Do Better: Alchemic commenced the season with a flourish •of trumpets, but his subsequent form has not been so good. It would appear that he is not a very good doer, especially away from home, but he may improve as the result of his race on Saturday, and do better on the Taranaki circuit.

From a Great Family: Joviality, a brother to Merry Peel and Merry Hunter, showed great pace at Wanganui, and he should develop into something above the average with more experience. He is a typical product of the mating of Hunting Song with this mare, and as he is thoroughly sound, he looks a good prospect. He is raced by Mr F. T. Hall in the well-known black and white colours of the family, and is trained at Hastings by C. Stowe. Won in Record Time:

Ponty, who won the Second Highweight by four lengths at Reefton, a month ago, in record time, appeals as a sound place proposition for the Halswell Handicap, where he is sitting three pounds above the minimum. There is no direct line on the form of the others and Riccarton is a different matter to Reefton, but he looked there like a horse who was still susceptible to much improvement.

Omoto Contingent: Silver Ring, Metal Bird and Copyist left Greymouth by this morning’s express train for Christchurch. Silver Ring is not engaged next Saturday, but he will do his final gallops at Riccarton before going on to Dunedin, where he claims engagements on both days. Metal Bird and Copyist are in the Craven Plate. Middle Park Plate:

Two-year-olds have a good record in the Middle Park Plate, horses of that age having Avon 32 of the 52 contests held under its conditions. Two years ago, Mr C. N. Draper was successful with Custodian, and this year he has another Lord Warden youngster in Custos, to represent him. Gustos won the Nursery Handicap on the middle day at Trentham, and in a field that is not very strong numerically, he may be equal to winning again.

Another Applicant: First in the field for the right to include the Duke of Gloucester Cup ou its programme was the Waikouaiti Racing Club. The Canterbury Jockey Club has now submitted a request that 1 it be allowed to include the Cup in its Grand National programme, next August. This is one event for amateur riders, and such races formerly were a feature of National Week.

Damages £6000: Grandstands 'are peculiarly vulnerable to “acts of God.” The Manawatu Racing Club, as the result of Sunday’s gale, is faced with a repair bill estimated, at £6OOO, and the Club cannot afford it. Many stables at Awapuni, a relatively sheltered area, in ordinary circumstances, also suffered Mrs A. W. McDonald’s stable was partly unroofed.

Liverpool National: Conditions for the Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase in March are the same as obtained for the race last year. TJie race is confined to six-yedr-olds apd upwards who at entry have been placed first, second or third by the judge in a steeplechase of three miles or upwards, value 200sovs to the winner, or in a steeplechase of any distance at Aintree, Liverpool, or who have woh any steeplechase value 500 govs (selling races in every case fexcepted).

Crossing: Some years ago, the late Mr L. K. S. Mackinnon was annoyed at the scramble that ruined the chances of several horses at the start of a race. Turning to a well-known trainer, he asked: “Is there any remedy for the crossing that takes place at the start of a sprint?” The trainer quickly answered: “Yes; do away with barrier positions and get the starter, when caling riders into line to ask the triers to go to the inside and ‘no goers’ to the outside!”

Midsummer Handicap: Non-acceptors for the C.J.C. Midsummer Handicap were Greek Shepherd, Fracas, Argentic and McHeath. Queen of Song had one pound less in the Dunedin Cup, but she was scratched for that race. On the other hand, Greek Shepherd’s preference for the Cup is easily understood, as he was asked to meet Queen of Song nine pounds better than at Riccarton, next Saturday. Chidden (10 pounds) and

•Tout le Monde (seven pounds) are two others who are more favourably weighted at Wingatui than at Riccarton, through Queen of .Song, but they have decided to face> up to the position and to hope for the best.

Twenty Grand to Retire: Twenty Grand, who went over to England last March from America with the idea of winning one or more of the big Cup races, will probably be sent to the stud shortly. It is expected that he will stand in Ireland. His trainer, Captain Boyd L ßochfort, is in the United States, and he will consult with the owner, Mrs Harry Payne Whitney (says an English report). Twenty Grand, who is seven years old, went over to England witli tlie reputation of being one of the best horses ever bred in America. lie was tlie winner of the Kentucky Derby and of £52,000 in stake-money. He also’held the time record for ten furlongs. He ran once at Newmarket and once at Ascot, without success. Unusual Hurdle Incident:

An unusual incident is reported from England in connection with a 1 hurdle race at Colwick Park, Nottipg- . ham, in December. After Philander . had passed the post a winner by three- . quarters of a length, his rider, C. Laver, fpll out of the saddle. He held on to the reins and was dragged several paces in imminent peril of being I kicked. When he released his hold: , and Philander got away, Laver lay, ; still for a moment or two, after which - he got up, walked for a stride and ; collapsed. He was quickly on his feet I again. Philander had not got far and. I soon Laver was in the saddle, being heartily cheered for his pluck when he returned to the paddock. It was thought that the mishap had been caused' by a leather breaking, but Laver said that when he stood up in the stirrups to pull up one of his legs was set as stiff as a piece of wood, through cramp. This caused him to step down under the heels of his mount and accounted also for his collapse when he tried to stand up. The boy was cut about the head, but he was all right after receiving treatment. Laver has not had much riding in public, and this was his first win. TAPANUI RESULTS. GORE, February 6.
